Sao Paulo Soccer Stadiums

Sport Facilities

Sao Paulo City is known as having the best soccer players in Brazil. The city is also home to three of the biggest soccer teams in the country. These three teams are: Sao Paulo, Corinthians, and Palmeiras. Believe it or not all three of these teams have their own stadium located in the city! Morumbi Stadium is the home of the Sao Paulo Football Club, Pacaembu Stadium is the Corinthians home stadium, and Parque Antartica is the home of the Palmeiras Club. If you're a soccer fan and have the chance to visit any of these stadiums on a game day I'd highly recommend it. You'll be amazed by how crazy and passionate Brazilians are about their soccer teams!

  1. Morumbi Soccer Stadium

Morumbi Soccer Stadium, also known as "Estadio Cicero Pompeu de Toledo" is the biggest soccer stadium in Sao Paulo City. Morumbi was inaugurated on October 2nd, 1960. The first soccer game ever held at Morumbi Stadium was Sao Paulo (1) versus Sporting (0) - a soccer team from Parana State. Because of Sao Paulo's win this game became of great historical importance since Morumbi Stadium was built specially for the Sao Paulo Football Club.

After Sao Paulo won that first home game, the Morumbi neighborhood was quickly taken by Sao Paulo fans celebrating such a good start with their new home team. Morumbi Stadium is located on Praca Roberto Gomes Pedrosa in the Morumbi Neighborhood. The stadium can hold up to 140,000 spectators but for security reasons, during "big game days" the crowd is limited to 80,000 people.

  2. Pacaembu Stadium

Pacaembu Stadium, also known as "Estadio Municipal Paulo Machado de Carvalho," was inaugurated on April 27th, 1940. The Pacaembu Stadium is located on Praca Charles Miller, in Pacaembu neighborhood and holds up to 70,000 people. Corinthians is the team that has most played at Pacaembu stadium, and for this reason, the team is considered Pacaembu's home team.

On May 4th, 1940, Palmeiras (2) beat Corinthians (1), being the first club to win a competition at Pacaembu Stadium. Since that day Corinthians and Palmeiras have became the 2 biggest rivals in the history of Brazilian Soccer. Another important moment on Pacaembu's history books dates back to the 1950 World Cup, where the stadium held several soccer games, including three final round matches! Pacaembu Stadium, besides being used for important soccer tournaments is also a place where "Paulistas" can go to participate in many recreational activities. Inside the stadium you will find a swimming pool, volleyball courts, basketball courts, indoor soccer courts, tennis courts, and also gymnastics classes.

  3. Parque Antartica

Parque Antartica, also known as "Palestra Italia," is Palmeiras' home stadium. Back in 1902 the Palestra Italia Stadium was just a soccer field regularly rented out to many of the smaller soccer clubs in Sao Paulo. But in the 1920s the big Palmeiras Club decided to buy the property and build its own soccer stadium. So in 1930 Palmeiras invested a lot of money into the stadium in order to make it look professional and capable of holding thousands of spectators. Then finally on August 13, 1933 Parque Antartica got re-inaugurated, with a capacity of 38,000 fans.

The Stadium is located on the east part of Sao Paulo, approximately 10 km from downtown Sao Paulo; due to its close location with the downtown area, Palestra Italia often holds international and national musical events. Parque Antartica also regularly holds important championships such as the South America Cup, Mercosul Championship, Brazilian Cup, and the annual Brazilian Championship.
