Paulista Avenue

Wall Street of Sao Paulo

The biggest financial center in Latin America is Paulista Avenue, it's known as the "Wall Street" of São Paulo. Along this bustling avenue is where many international and Brazilian companies are located. Everyday more than 450,000 people come and go as they conduct and run their businesses.

Paulista Avenue, called Avenida Paulista in Brazil, was founded on December 8, 1851. It was designed by Joaquim Eugenio de Lima of Uruguay. At the time this avenue was considered a great project because of how wide Joaquim had designed the 1.7 mile (2.8km) avenue - three lanes of traffic moving in each direction. In the mid 19th century, the days of horse and buggy, this was something never seen before.

Up and down the avenue are many tourist attractions São Paulo has to offer. On the historic side of the avenue there is the Municipal Theater, the Viaduct of Tea (Viaduto do Cha), and Anhangabau Valley. While on the other side is the modern and sophisticated offices and residential buildings - the heart of modern São Paulo.
