Ibirapuera Park

Sao Paulo Parks

Ibirapuera Park is known as the “Central Park” in São Paulo, Brazil. This park was founded on August 21, 1954 to celebrate the 400th birthday of São Paulo’s City. Ibirapuera Park covers an area of 390 acres (158 hectares), and is surrounded by a busy neighborhood with some of the most popular attractions in São Paulo.

One of these popular attractions is “Obelisk”, considered the tallest monument in the city of São Paulo standing 236 feet (72 meters) high. This monument is a memorial for all the people who died in the Revolution of Constitution in 1932. In order to remember and pay attribute to all the soldiers, the monument is inscribed with passages from the Bible and stained glass scenes with pictures of the history of São Paulo.

The “Bandeira Monument”, another attraction located in front of Ibirapuera Park, was created by Victor Brecheret, a famous architect, to remember the members of the expedition called Bandeira (Flag). This monument is considered one of the most famous symbols in São Paulo standing 40 feet (12 meters) high and 165 feet (50 meters) across.

Another attraction that you'll find on the west side of Ibirapuera Park is the Japanese Pavilion. The buildings of this Pavilion accentuate the Japanese style of architecture. The Pavilion has several rooms, each displaying Japanese art expositions, samurai clothes, vases and statues from several dynasties. The upper levels of the Pavilion have a beautiful view of the gardens and the lake in Ibirapuera Park.

The Museum of Modern Art, the Contemporary Art Museum (MAC), the Aeronautic Museum, Planetario (Planetarium) and the Folklore Museum, are all located inside Ibirapuera Park, allowing visitors and tourists ample choice.

Ibirapuera Park also offers entertainment and cultural events to its visitors held at the Peace Square Park (Praça da Paz). The square holds events including concerts with famous Brazilian artists, shows and sporting events.
