Museum of Modern Art
Sao Paulo Culture
The São Paulo Museum of Modern Art was built in 1948, making it one of the first museums in Latin America. It was founded by Francisco Ciccillo Matarazzo and Yolanda Penteado, and designed by Lina Bo Bardi, the same lady who designed the
São Paulo Museum of Art.
The collection at the Museum of Modern Art is made up of an estimated 40 thousand pieces. Included in this collection are paintings, sculptures, pictures, videos, and even live performances. Pieces by Brazilian artists such as Candido Portinari, Tarsila do Amaral, Emiliando Cavalcanti and Vitor Brecheret are included in the collection. Outside the museum is a beautiful 1½ acre (6000 sq. meter) garden where there are 25 magnificently carved Brazilian artifacts. This outside garden is available for all to see.
Tip:
While I was there the museum was free every Tuesday and Thursday after 5 pm.
