Pinacoteca do Estado

Sao Paulo Culture

The Pinacoteca do Estado was designed by Ramos de Azevedo and built between 1897 and 1900. It initially opened as a school for the arts, to inspire and educate young artists, then in 1911 it opened to the public when it held its first art exhibit. This first art exhibit gave the Pinacoteca do Estado the honor of being the first art museum in São Paulo.

When the Pinacoteca do Estado was first built, poor construction exposed much of the artwork to the weather. In order to keep up with regulations, and to avoid further damage to the art, the Pinacoteca underwent much need repairs and renovations. Today the rooms are restored, the roof replaced, and much of the artwork protected in environmentally controlled rooms, where illumination, humidity, and temperature are regulated and monitored.

Today this great gallery is home to approximately 4,000 works of art - both old and new, with some artwork dating back to the 19th century. Much of the artwork on display is from local Brazilian artists, many of whom are São Paulo natives.
