During the winter months, from June-August, temperatures can reach as low as 32 to 60F (10 to 15C). While you would think there wouldn't be a lot to do in
Sao Paulo
during these months, you would be wrong. To many people's surprise there's actually a winter resort in Brazil known as Campos do Jordão.
Campos do Jordão is a quiet little European style city located in the Mantiqueira mountains, 5350 feet (1628 m) above sea level. When visiting Campos do Jordão you'll find it necessary to pack heavy clothing such as sweaters, pants, jackets, and socks. The climate is much cooler than in Sao Paulo, and when properly dressed you'll better enjoy the activities such as hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, canoing, or mountain biking.
A popular activity I enjoyed at Campos do Jordão was the chair ride up Morro do Elefante, or Elephant Hill. At the top of this hill there's a great view of the city below. As well, from the top you can embark on mountainous trail rides and enjoy the fresh cool mountain air.
I found the trip to Campos do Jordão was an excellent way to spend a couple days away from the congestion of Sao Paulo. I stayed a couple nights so I could relax in the European style atmosphere and take in many of the little shops and restaurants. If you plan to visit Campos do Jordão I would recommend booking accommodation in advance, especially if visiting during the winter months. It's a very popular destination and accommodation can be hard to come by.
Getting There
To get there from Sao Paulo you can take a 2 hour bus ride at a cost of approximately $8 to $10 USD. Tickets can be purchased at the bus station from Expresso da Mantiqueira.
