Rio Samba Schools
Samba School Competition
There are 14 samba schools in
Rio de Janeiro;
the names of these schools are: Sao Clemente, Caprichosos, Unidos da tijuca, Salgueiro, Grande Rio, Mangueira, Portela, Tradicao, Porto da Pedra, Imperatriz, Imperio Serrano, Beija-flor, Viradouro, and Mocidade. Most of the schools are composed of the poorer people of Rio who live in the
favelas
throughout Rio. The money used to fund samba schools is mainly from ticket sales, television rights, and the members own pockets. The samba schools practice and prepare costumes many months before the competition, and sometimes you will even see them practicing in the streets, but not dressed in costume.

During the parade the samba schools begin with a large banner presenting the name of the school. Each school chooses a theme and prepares many large floats that contribute to that theme. All of the schools write their own Carnival music which is repeatedly sang during the Carnival parade. One of the greatest parts of the parade is the drum section. Here you will see many men holding drums and other percussion instruments, keeping the harmony of the parade. The Sambodromo (link) is where the Carnival Rio parade is unforgettable. You are able to watch the parade carnival Brazil on TV, but there is nothing that compares to being in the Sambodromo!
