Ipanema beach is the most charming beach in Rio de Janeiro. During the summer months this beach is very popular, and thanks in part to the song "Girl From Ipanema" this beach has become well know throughout the world.

There are so many things to do at Ipanema beach besides working on an amazing tan. For instance, every Sunday you can watch Capoeira at Ipanema beach. Capoeira is a very popular Brazilian dance, in fact it's a mixture between martial arts and dance. Many people throughout Brazil practice Capoeira, it's truly amazing to watch! Other activities at the beach include beach soccer, foot volleyball, or frescobol. Even if you're not interested in participating in many of these activities, take time to watch them play. Foot volleyball for instance is similar to volleyball, but instead they use a soccer ball and the use of hands is restricted. It's unbelievable how much control they have over the ball using their bodies. This game can become quite serious, you'll regularly see fans putting money on who will win.

This Brazilian beach has a unique trait. There's an area of the beach marked by a big rainbow colored flag. This area is reserved for gays and lesbians, or gay and lesbian friendly individuals. If this is a part of your lifestyle you can stay in this section of the beach and feel welcomed by all.

At Ipanema beach you may also notice a greater number of beach vendors. This is because located on the hillside next to Ipanema beach is a favela. Many of the residents of this favela make their way down to Ipanema beach and peddle their wears. Some of the crafts they have to sell are truly beautiful, it's an excellent opportunity to pick-up some unique souvenirs. However, because of the proximity to the favela it's important to keep your valuables in a safe place when visiting.

If you have the time, try to stay at Ipanema beach until late afternoon; it's one of the most beautiful places to enjoy the sunset.
