Tijuca National Park is a vast tropical rain forest located in the heart of
Rio de Janeiro.
The park itself covers an area of 46 square miles (120 square kilometers), making it the largest urban park in the world. Since 1857 efforts have been underway to reforest and protect this natural wonder; this reforestation effort in Tijuca National Park has been very successful as its saved much of Tijuca Forest - most of which has been re-planted.

Tijuca Park is a spectacular tourist attraction. It's home to
Corcovado Mountain
and the Statue of Christ, Gavea Rock (Pedra da Gávea), Beautiful Rock (Pedra Bonita), as well as the second highest peak in Rio de Janeiro, Tijuca Peak, at 3350 ft. (1021 meters). From Tijuca Peak you have a view of the entire city of
Rio,
some of the sites you'll see include:
Sugar Loaf Mountain,
Maracana Stadium,
Favela of Rocinha,
and Rio-Niterói Bridge. Many of the Rio's beaches can also been seen from Tijuca Peak, such as:
Copacabana,
Ipanema,
Leblon,
Botafogo, and
Guanabara Bay.

Guided tours of Tijuca National Park are available for those adventurous, or ecotourist types. There are many tours to choose from but most tours are by jeep. The jeep tours are best because they take you right into Tijuca Park, these jeeps can easily handle the steep terrain and narrow roads. On these tours you'll enjoy beautiful waterfalls, archaeological ruins, hidden caves, and if you're lucky you may see some exotic wildlife. Tijuca park is home to monkeys, snakes, sloths, and more!
