Brasilia Central Bank
The Central Bank Museum of Values (Museu de Valores) was inaugurated on August 31st, 1972 in
Rio de Janeiro
as part of the anniversary celebration of Brazil's Independence Day. On September 8th,1981 when the Central Bank of Brazil constructed its biggest space in the city of
Brasilia,
the Central Bank Museum of Values moved to the
capital of Brazil.
This new location was bigger, safer, and amazingly beautiful.
The goal of the museum is to preserve the history and evolution of Brazilian money, as well as advertise the cultural patrimony of Brazil. Throughout the years, the collections of the museum have grown and its visitors can now appreciate the well preserved history and culture of many societies that
Brazil
has been home to.
The exhibition space open to the public is a huge 14,000 square feet (1,300 square meters). There are 8 different exhibit rooms that tell the history about Brazilian currency:
Brazil Room
Here you see coins and paper money that once was official Brazilian currency.
World Room
Here you see money and coins from more than 50 different countries throughout the world. The room displays the most popular money from different regions of the world.
Gold Room
In this room, there are 8 different glass boxes displaying several shapes of gold. This room is the favorite room among foreign visitors.
Central Bank Emission Room
Shows coins used in Brazil since 1964 and onward. 1964 is the year in which the Central Bank of Brazil was created.
Money Curiosities Room
Curiosities about the money's transformation throughout the years.
Other Values Room
Shows a variety of medals and special commemorative coins.
Money Fabrication Room
Here you can see the phases of money fabrication as well as some security elements that are impressed on Brazilian paper money.
In addition to these rooms the Central Bank Museum of Values offers temporary exhibition rooms; these rooms are designed especially for students interested in the history of Brazilian money.
At the time of writing the Central Bank Museum of Values is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5:30pm and 2pm to 6pm on Saturdays.
