Juscelino Kubitschek Memorial

Brasilia Attractions

A popular attraction in Brasilia, visited by many tourists and locals alike, is the Juscelino Kubitschek Memorial - known also as the JK Memorial. Inaugurated in 1981, the JK Memorial is the resting place of Juscelino Kubitschek, the former Brazilian president who's responsible for the creation of Brasilia.

Juscelino Kubitschek's ashes are kept in the circular “Mortuary Chamber Room”, which is considered a magical place. The Memorial is also the house for Kubitschek's private library and some personal possessions such as pictures, medals and personal articles. At the entrance of the JK Memorial there's a 28 meter Monument with the Statue of the former president of Brazil welcoming visitors.

The monument features a beautifully inscribed plaque in honor of the much-loved leader, and president of Brazil, during Brasilia's glory years. The plaque reads “Everything transforms itself into dawn in this city that opens for this morning.”

The memorial is located at Praca do Cruzeiro in the West Monumental Eixo. At the time of writing the JK Memorial can be visited Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:45 pm, tickets are R$2.00 or approximately $0.50 USD.
