National Claudio Santoro Theater
Brasilia Attractions
In Lucio Costa's Pilot Plan he had said that
Brasilia
was not only going to be the city of efficiency and well organized work, but also a place rich with culture.
The construction of the National Theater started July 30th, 1960 and after many changes and interruptions it was officially completed in March, 1981. The National Claudio Santoro Theater is the biggest architectural center created by Oscar Niemeyer in Brasilia.
Niemeyer came up with the design plans for the theater during the
Carnival
season, back when the city of Brasilia was just beginning construction. The building has hints of Aztec Architecture and is the shape of a truncated pyramid. It has 3,608 panes of glass on the east and west sides, and tonnes of white cubes with varying dimensions on the north and south walls.
The theater was originally built to hold art exhibits, but today there are three different auditoriums: Martins Pena Room, Alberto Nepomuceno Room, and Villa Lobos Room - used to hold musical concerts.
In a city where impressive monuments are everywhere, the National Claudio Santoro Theater is one of most striking and popular of all.
