Brasilia Zoo consists of 345 acres (140 hectares) inside the 1700 acres (690 hectares) controlled by FunPEB (Brasilia Ecological Foundation). The zoo is located in the middle of a cerrado biome vegetation, a typical vegetation of Brasilia. In the zoo there are three artificial lakes with artificial islands where visitors can see monkeys, ducks and birds.

Brasilia Zoo has 1300 animals including Brazilian birds, reptiles and mammals. There's a total of 253 species, with the main focus on the South American animals which are on the verge of extinction. Brasilia Zoo is not only for visitors to view the animals, it's also concerned with preserving species, animal reproduction, and environmental education.

Inside the Zoo you can find facilities such as restaurants, a library, a small museum, an auditorium and an open sky theater. At the time of writing tickets are R$2.00 for adults; children under 10 and adults over 60 are free. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm.
