Brasilia is located in central Brazil, in a federal district carved out of the state of Goias. Brasilia can be found on the Central Plateau, and is bordered by the Rio Preto (Black River) on the East, and by the Rio Descoberto (Discovered River) on the West. The total size of the city is 2.2 square miles (5.7 square km) and has an average temperature of 69 F (20.5 C), making it similar to the climate of tropical Savannah. Brasilia is situated 720 miles (1160 km) by bus from Rio de Janeiro, and 578 miles (931 km) by plane. The distance to Sao Paulo is 628 miles (1010 km) by bus and 540 miles (870 km) by plane.

The population of Brasilia, including the satellite towns, is approximatly 2 million. Brasilia is home to the executive, legislative, and judicial powers of the federal government of Brazil
