Botanical Gardens

Brasilia Parks

Brasilia Botanical Gardens also known as JBB - Jardim Botanico de Brasilia was created on March 8, 1985.

The JBB is a unique botanical garden because it kept its natural environment in the Brazilian Cerrado as opposed to other botanical gardens that follow the European style of being concerned about aesthetics, leisure, and adoption of foreigns plants. Instead the Brasilia Botanical Gardens are located right on the Brazilian Cerrado and considered a conservation hot spot, particularly because of its native flora. About 10,000 species, 44% of which are native, are found in the Cerrado.

The Garden has several nature trails that allow you to see the different Cerrado plant species, some of which are highly specialized to endure the long dry season typical of this area. Lately the Botanical Garden of Brasilia has become a space for search and studies about the fauna and flora, environmental education, and leisure for Brazilians and visitors.

Orchids

In the Brasilia Botanical Gardens the tourists can visit an area of 1300 acres (526 hectares) where there are gardens with native and exotic plants. In 2005 JBB is going to be expanded by the addition of an area for hands on studies. With several attractions to the public, Brasilia Botanical Gardens reached 27 thousand visitors in 2004.

What can you see at JBB
Brasilia Botanical Garden:

Margareth Mee Orquid Room – In this area you can see an ample collection of orchids coming from several regions of South America and also the ones that flourish in the JBB garden.

Laboratory – promotes the accomplishment of searches in the botanical area, ecological area, and natural resources looking forward to keep and protect the Cerrado plant species.

Kyoto Mini Forest – has 141 trees, and 14 species natives to the Cerrado. It is located close to Botanical Gardens Theater. The bosque was created with the intentions of creating a green space, where the pure air and the contact with nature can be reached by JBB visitors.

Jorge Peles Greenhouse – this greenhouse can hold up to 500,000 seedlings and is specialized in the cultivation of plants native to the Cerrado vegetation where the Botanical Gardens are located. The greenhouse also produces aroma-therapeutic plants that can be used by the community.

Ecological Trails - The Botanical Gardens offer to its visitors an ecological trail of approximately 2.8 miles (4.5 km) where you can see all the tropical fruits, plants, trees and vegetation of the Brazilian Cerrado. You will also walk around many small lakes along the trail.
