São Paulo Locals
Paulistas
In each Brazilian state the locals have different nicknames, and in
São Paulo
the locals are referred to as “Paulistas.” When visiting São Paulo or other cities in Brazil the name Paulistas is fairly common. Those living in São Paulo are very proud of being Paulistas because they are considered hard workers. São Paulo after all is the financial, industrial, and commercial hub of Brazil.
There are quite a few differences between the states in Brazil and from state to state there are slightly different accents. If for example you were to learn Portuguese from a Paulista in São Paulo, then head up to
Rio de Janeiro,
the locals in Rio may be able to tell the origin of your Portuguese. This is due to the slight difference in accent or slang words. The slang terms used by Paulistas are different from other states. São Paulo residents, or Paulistas, have their own terms for certain things. If you try to use these same slang terms in Rio, or elsewhere in Brazil, they may look at you like you are crazy - or they may say something about you being a Paulista.

Off to Brazil? A good quality (english) roadmap is a must if you'll be touring the country much. City and street maps are also useful if you plan to visit the many tourist attractions in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro, or Sao Paulo.
