Night Life in Brazil

Filed under: Ask Us - December 24th, 2005

Your Question

Hi is there good night life for young people in Brazil? e.g many clubs/bars??

Our Reply

Brazil has an amazing nightlife. Depending on the city you choose to go to, you will always find something to do at night. If you are going to Sao Paulo, there is unlimited options every day of the week for all ages. Some of the smaller cities may be a little harder to find exactly what you want, but there are always clubs and bars to attend. If you let me know what city you are going to I may be able to help a little more. Rio as well has a vast variety of bars and clubs for every night of the week, and for every style of music you enjoy.

Beautiful Horizon (Beagá)

Filed under: Ask Us - December 22nd, 2005

Your Question

Do you have a city by the name of “Beautiful Horizon”? If so, is it large and what are the cities with 2 to 3 million population?

Our Reply

Yes, there is a city in Brazil by the name of “Beautiful Horizon.” Infact it is Brazil’s 4th largest city with a population of over 2 million people. In Portuguese the name of this city is “Belo Horizonte,” but in Brazil it’s even better known as Beagá, which is simply the Portuguese pronunciation of “BH” (from its initials).

Belo Horizonte

Beagá was officially inaugurated in December 1897 as the state capital of Minas Gerais, and it was the first planned city in Brazil. Interestingly, at the time of inauguration the city was named “Cidade de Minas,” but later changed back to its original (and current) name in 1901. Today Beagá is a powerful economic and cultural center, with multiple universities, cathedrals, and sports stadiums. It is located close to rich supplies of natural resources, which encourages the city’s steel, automobile, and textile industries. Flying to Belo Horizonte from Rio de Janeiro takes only a short 50 minutes.

Some of Brazil’s other large cities include:
(2003 Estimates)

1.  São Paulo 10,677,019
2.  Rio de Janeiro 5,974,081
3.  Salvador 2,556,429
4.  Belo Horizonte     2,305,812
5.  Fortaleza 2,256,233
6.  Brasília 2,189,789
7.  Curitiba 1,671,194
8.  Manaus 1,527,314
9.  Recife 1,461,320
10.  Porto Alegre 1,394,385

Rio de Janeiro Tunnels

Filed under: Ask Us - December 9th, 2005

Your Question

I heard there are tunnels under Rio, is this true and if so can people tour them?

Our Reply

Rio de Janeiro has a huge underground tunnel network, which is arguably the largest underground urban highway in the world. The first tunnels in Rio began appearing in the early part of the 20th century. In fact the first tunnel built connected the Botafogo and Copacabana neighborhoods. At this time donkeys where used to draw trams through the tunnels. Today Rio has more than 30 tunnels which are used by both LRT (light rapid transit) as well as automobiles.

As far as abandoned tunnel tours ( I think this is what you’re really after), we unfortunately don’t know of any. If anyone has heard anything about Rio de Janeiro tunnel tours, please let us know!

We don’t have anything like this at Cities In Brazil, but we did take a look around for you. We found a few video websites which may have what you’re looking for. Unfortunately, however, we didn’t see anything specifically for the 2001 Sambodromo Parade on these sites. You may need to contact them to see if they have it in stock but just not listed.
