Your Question
I’ve been trying to find a website for the Rio de Janeiro Philharmonic Orchestra. Do they have one? How many concerts are they playing this year and what are their programs? Who is the conductor? I’m very interested in some recent history about the orchestra. News articles, etc.
Our Reply
Yes, the Rio de Janeiro Philharmonic Orchestra does have a website (http://www.filarmonica-rio.com.br). Unfortunately, however, it’s all in Portuguese and we weren’t able to find an English version of their website.
The conductors name is Florentino Dias. He has great experience in conducting orchestras as he has been performing since 1962. He has received his masters in conducting and has performed well over 150 concerts in and near Rio de Janeiro alone.
By clicking on Assista on the left hand side of the web page you will be able to watch a short clip of the city of Rio as well as a quick glimpse of the orchestra. If you click on ouça which is also located on the left side of the web page, there are two songs performed by the orchestra available for download. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any information regarding their concert dates and their program because their site has not yet been updated for the year of 2006.
For anyone else who maybe having a difficult time finding a particular Symphony or Orchestra, we found the above Orchestra though Orcheseek, a global portal of Symphony Orchestras. (http://orcheseek.fc2web.com)

Your Question:
I see there is a Metro/Onibus pass for R$2.60. What can I useit for? One ride on each or what?
Our Reply:
The Metro/Ônibus pass is valid for one bus ride as well as one metro ride. By metro I mean subway just for clarification. These tickets are called integracao, this means that buying both together is cheaper than it would be if you bought them separate. There are many places throughout the larger cities that you will need to take both a bus as well as the subway to get where you need to go, so this is a situation that you would want to look for the Metro/Onibus integracao tickets.
Hopefully you will be in Brazil soon to be able to use the tickets!

Your Question:
Where is the best place for a single man to stay in Rio?
What 4 days in February is Carnival celebrated?
Are there any all inclusive vacation packages to Rio?
Thanks.
Our Reply:
I would highly recommend staying along either Copacabana beach or Ipanema Beach. Both beaches are very long in that you would not want to be staying at the very end and need to walk or taxi just to get to the other side. By staying near Arpoador beach, you will be close to all 3 beaches. Arpoador is located right in the middle of Ipanema and Copacabana. If you hear anything about posts, this is telling you what point you are located at the beach. I would recommend staying anywhere near posts 5,6,7 which are all located at one end of Copacabana, or posts 10,11, or 12 on Ipanema.
Carnaval is to be happening Feb 24th -28th. There are many packages that you can find regarding Carnaval. I would recommend going to a local travel agent or following some of the links we provide on our page to get you in touch with the right people who will give you the information you need about prices, and what the packages include. Hurry and book it, because Carnaval is approaching and you don’t want to miss out on the biggest party of the year.

Your Question:
I recently applied to complete my student teaching in Rio de Janeiro. If selected, I will be student teaching in an English speaking school. I was just wondering if you could tell me a little bit about a typical Brazilian first grade classroom.
Our Reply:
Well, the typical first grade classroom will obviously be composed of little kids screaming their heads off.
Of course I am kidding now because in grade 1 they are still little angels. So, most schools here in Brazil have dress codes. All the kids will be required to wear the same uniform. If you will be teaching english, be prepared for the kids to start off very quiet becasue they are intimidated to speak english, but once they become comfortable, the will most likely be extremely outspoken. Kids here are not quite as polite and respectful as they are in North America. It is most likely that the kids will come from wealthy families as well, because not a lot of people can afford to put their children in english emersion classes due to the expense.
Hope this helps.

Your Question
What is the current money exchange in US$ to Brazilian money?
$1US=? Brazilian
Our Reply
The local currency in Brazil is known as the Real (R$) and it typically trades at a discount compared to most major currencies. As of February 13, 2006 for every $1 USD you could buy R$2.15 BRL (Brazilian Reals). If you’ve been following the Brazilian currency you’ll notice its gained a lot of strength over the past year. In fact about year ago for $1 USD you would have been able to buy R$2.6 BRL.
A great website that we use to gather the current exchange rates is Yahoo’s Currency Converter. This link will take you to the USD - Brazilian Real (BRL) exchange rate.

Your Question
Hi, I am looking for a place to stay close to Sao Paulo (within 4 hours). Where would you recommend for beaches (to relax and swim) and a bit of ecotourism (hiking, snorkelling, waterfalls etc)? Is Ubatuba the best or should I look at other options? Any hotel or pousada recommendations? (around $30US/night or less for 6 night stay).
Also I would like to shop in Sao Paulo but only have a day (probably a Sunday) and am travelling by myself. Can you recommend a hotel and tour company that could take me? Or where i could stay close to March 25th street?
Our Reply
In reply to your question about the best place to stay near Sao Paulo, I recommend Ubatuba, Camburi, Guaruja, and Santos. These beaches are all within 4 hours of Sao Paulo. Ubatuba is the longest distance of approximately 3.5 hours, Camburi is approx 3 hours away, Guaruja is approximately 2 hours and Santos is approximately 1.5 hours. Each of these beaches offers different things for you. Camburi is a very beautiful beach, and is a bit more expensive than the others, but still very affordable. Ubatuba is the longest distance, but is definately a great place to go. Guaruja is very close to Sao Paulo city, making it very populated with people from the city. Santos is the least popular out of the 4, but it offers similar attractions.
If you are looking to spend approx 30 US dollars per night, there are quite a few options for you. Depending on the exchange rate, right now that would be about $66 reals. It is possible to look into hotels, or even hostels if you are interested. Once at the beach, there are many excursions you can part take in. You will be able to take a sail boat to other islands, or take hikes in the mountains. Make sure you do the hikes with a guide because you wouldnt want to run into any problems alone in the woods.
As for Sao Paulo, there are many places to stay that are near march 25th street. However, there is also a very efficient metro system in Sao Paulo that will take you right to the street. I would recommend staying not so close to March 25th street, but staying close to a metro station. It is very easy to find hotels etc through the internet, and I have found that many sites have english, and those working in the hotel usually speak a bit of english. I am not aware of any tours that go directly to March 25th street, and I would not recommend going alone. I dont know when you are planning on coming, but if you are really interested in going there, write to me again, because there are 2 other tourists who have asked me to take them there, and maybe if you are here then, you can join the group. It would be much safer for you.
If you have any more questions please dont hesitate to ask.

Your Question
Where can I purchase a small statuette of Jesus on the Mountain.
Our Reply
The Statue of Christ is one of the most popular places in Rio and for this reason, the statues are sold everywhere. From Corcovado Mountain, to local shops located throughout the city or feirinhas located along the beaches, you will easily find a place to purchase your statue. There are different kinds of Statues; some are made by wood, others by glass, and even by stone. There are also different sizes of statues that are purchased with different prices depending on where you buy it, the size of the statue, and the material with which the statue is made. If you want to get a fancy one, I would recommend that you purchase one at Corcovado Mountain, the place where the original statue is located. If you just want to buy a simple one, Feirinhas are the way to go. The prices range in between 10 reals up to 400.
Be careful because as a tourist, the street vendors at the feirinhas will try to make you pay more than what they would make a Brazilian pay. At the feira I paid 15 reals for a statue that was about 8 inches tall and made of wood. Most of the time, the initial price they say is more than what they expect to get. If they know you are a tourist, they will probably double the price, so be ready to bargain!
I hope you find it. Good luck!

Your Question
We are arriving in Rio by air and leaving on a cruise ship. Where are the cruise ships (Radission Seven Seas) docked and what is the easiest way to get from the international airport to the ship terminal? Is there a more detailed map available on line?
Our Reply
In Rio de Janeiro the cruise ships dock at the Pier Mauá, just across from Praça Mauá (within walking distance from downtown). If you’re arriving by air then you’ll likely be landing at Antônio Carlos Jobim Airport, which is about 18km (11 miles) north of downtown. The best way to get from this airport to the cruise ship terminal is by radio taxi (prepay).
As for a map, I unfortunately couldn’t find anything on-line for you and we (Cities in Brazil) are currently working on maps but they are not near detailed enough yet. Instead I’ll give you the latitude and longitude of the Pier Mauá, to use this plug it into Google Earth (free download) and you’ll “see” exactly where you’ll need to be.

Your Question
I am coming to Rio October 25th to Nov 8th this year. I would like to see some football matches at the local teams. What teams play in Rio. I will be staying at Plaza Copacabana hotel . Is it far to local stadiums and how much are tickets. I would also like to go horse racing . Is this in season in October/November.
Our Reply
From October 25th to November 8th you will be able to watch soccer matches of the Brazilian Championship Tournament – which is very well known throughout Brazil due to the excellent quality of soccer exhibition. If you want to enjoy good soccer I would recommend either a game where Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco or Botafogo will be playing. These are the 4 most popular teams in Rio de Janeiro. In order to see something really different, you should watch a match at Maracana Stadium. If you are staying at Plaza Copacabana Hotel, you are approximatelly 11 kilometers from the stadium. Tickets prices range from 10 to 30 reals, depending on which location of the stadium you would like to be.
As for horse racing, in Rio de Janeiro you will find Hipodromo da Gavea; popularly known as The Jockey Club. It is located between two other tourist attractions, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake and the Botanical Gardens. Hipodromo da Gavea holds Brazil’s most important horse-racing event. As for now, I could not find any information regarding races for october-november, but here is the time schedule when horse-races are held at Jockey Club: Monday nights starting at 6:30pm, friday evennings starting at 4:30pm, and saturdays and sundays starting at 2:00pm. You can either write me back closer to the date you are coming down to Brazil and I can try to find some new information or you can go to Jockey Club to check the news about horse riding in Rio de Janeiro.
