Memorial of Latin America
Sao Paulo Culture
The Memorial of Latin America was founded in 1988. It
consists of 5 different buildings, each a perfect example of modern engineering and architecture. This memorial was built as a place for the countries of Latin America to share ideas and celebrate their culture. This is also the location of the Latin-American Parliament, Parlatino.
The Memorial grounds are filled with Latin American artwork and sculptures. The most impressive of which is a giant hand known as Mao. This hand stands 23 feet (7 meters) high with an open palm dripping blood, which symbolizes the contrast of peoples lives throughout Latin America.
The memorial was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, a famous Brazilian architect who designed many of the buildings in
Brasilia,
the capital of Brazil.
