Tijuca National Park
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens (Jardim Botanico) located within
Tijuca National Park
were established in the early 1840s by an English gardener by the name of John Tyndale. He used these gardens as a way to introduce tea, cinnamon, pineapples, and cloves to Brazil, all of which were foreign plants. Today the botanical gardens are home to more than five thousand different plant species.
The gardens themselves are arranged such that half is composed of natural jungle, while the other half is laid out in avenues lined with palm trees. Many of these palm trees date back to 1808, the time the garden was first inaugurated.
These gardens are also home to monkeys, parrots,
and other wildlife native to Brazil.
