Petrópolis, Brazil
Brazil Cities Near Rio
Petrópolis is located in the mountains, 40 miles (64 km) north of
Rio de Janeiro,
it takes approximately 1 hour to reach by car. This city is also known as the Imperial City; named after Pedro II, emperor of Brazil from 1831 to 1889, for whom it was a favorite summer residence for himself, his family and his court. It was founded in 1845 by immigrants from Germany and therefore has a European feel about it.
My Experience
My journey to Petrópolis began by catching a bus to the city at Rio's main bus station. From there the bus heads north, eventually coming to a highway which leads to the city of Petrópolis. The bus follows a one-way highway to the city, and another one-way highway on the way back to
Rio de Janeiro,
so don't panic when the driver overtakes slower vehicles on all those blind corners.
The highway twists and turns its way up through the lush forest known as Serra de Orgoas. As the bus continues into the mountains one side of the highway drops away steeply. I recommend sitting on the left side of the bus, this way you'll get the best view.
Upon arriving at Petrópolis I enjoyed the change in climate. The air in this mountainous city was really crisp and without the humidity of Rio. Plus it was a nice break away from
Rio beaches,
where I had been spending a lot of my time.
There are many museums and Royal residences you can visit in the city. The easiest way to do this, I found, was by obtaining a walking map of the city. These maps highlight the 11 major sights which you can pay to enter, if they grab your fancy. I particularly enjoyed the Cathedral and the Imperial Museum, which give you a glimpse into life during the 19th century - life of the rich of course.
I would recommend against an organized tour of Petrópolis. The direct bus ride from
Rio
and the walking map of the city make this a very affordable day trip. It's simple to catch a bus for Petrópolis from Rio's main bus station. The buses leave every 15 minutes with either Facil or Unica bus lines. The cost is about 6 or 7 reals, or $3.00 USD each way. Once at Petrópolis pick-up your walking map and off you go.
