My Favela Experience

Favela of Rocinha

There are many favelas in and around Rio de Janeiro, the largest of which is the favela of Rocinha. While in Rio I felt I just couldn't pass-up the opportunity to visit a favela.

I signed-up with a good tour guide who drove us through the entire favela of Rocinha. We even stopped at a few places to meet some of the residents of the favela and see how they lived day-in and day-out. I felt quite sad seeing how these poor people obviously struggle to survive day-to-day. My heart really went out to those residents of the favela who live honestly trying to make ends. It's ashame that those favela residents who resort to crime have given all these people a poor reputation.

When I was in the favela I made sure I stayed close to the tour group, and before I left for the tour I made sure to leave my jewelery, fancy clothes, and expensive camera behind. I did, however, bring along an older camera and didn't have any problem, but I couldn't help feeling like I was constantly being watched.
