Dangers of Favelas

Favela of Rocinha

The favela of Rocinha is the largest favela in Latin America, with over 200,000 inhabitants. It's an amazing sight to see because of how truly crowded it is. Yet it's disturbing to see how the residents struggle day-to-day; these people are the poorest people in the country of Brazil.

With such extreme poverty, many favela residents resort to crime for survival. Favelas are among the most dangerous areas in all of Brazil. Interestingly, the most powerful individuals living in favelas are often drug dealers. Many of whom choose to live at the top of hillside favelas. These hillside favelas give them plenty of time to spot police approaching, allowing them to hide or dispose of their illegal substances.

There are safe ways to tour the favelas of Rio. The best option is to book a tour with one of the many tour guides offering such packages. Don't miss out for fear of the dangers, if you're with a tour guide you'll be quite safe.
