Feirinhas
Brazil Street Merchants
Feirinhas are temporary little shops located along sidewalks or along beach boardwalks. They are generally setup at 4:30pm in the afternoon and many are available until 8:00pm in the evening. They can be easily identified by their blue tarps which take-up about a block of the boardwalk.
These shops mainly cater to tourists and sell souvenirs, including the
Statue of Christ the Redeemer,
Sugar Loaf Mountain,
Maracana Stadium,
and many more. Other Feirinhas, however, may sell Brazilian soccer jerseys, Brazilian CDs, Rio de Janeiro T-shirts, Brazilian flags, and many other items related to Brazilian culture.
Be sure you barter with the Feirinha merchants! If they suspect you're a tourist, or if you only speak English, they will try to charge you much more. Also be warned they don't have sticker prices, you must ask how much things cost. As a general rule of thumb nothing should cost much more than 20 reals, or $8.00 USD. If you bargain well you can get many souvenirs at really decent prices.
