Visiting Favela Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro, the largest favela in Latin America, was a totally new experience for me while visiting Brazil. If you dare venture close, or even into a favela, be for-warned they can be dangerous places. There are, however, tour companies in Rio who offer guided tours into the favelas; but play it safe! Don't wear any expensive jewelery, fancy clothing, and hold onto your camera (if you bring it). In a favela you can easily become a target for a thieve hiding in the shadows .
